Columbia College Chicago, Dean of the School of Media Arts

Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of the School of Media Arts supports the mission and goals of Columbia College Chicago and works with senior administration to implement the College's strategic plan. The Dean provides academic and administrative leadership for the undergraduate and graduate departments and programs within the School and the College and promotes excellence in teaching and advising, creative endeavor, and scholarship, and service to the College and to the profession. The School of Media Arts currently comprises the departments of Audio Arts and Acoustics, Film & Video, Interactive Arts and Media, Interdisciplinary Arts, Journalism, Marketing Communication, Radio, and Television.

The Dean is expected to be a strong leader with vision and imagination demonstrating the ability to develop collaborative and interdisciplinary relationships within the School and College, with other institutions and organizations, and with the community, while expanding regional, national, and international relationships which advocate and represent the importance of media and the arts. In addition, the Dean of the School of Media Arts actively participates in fund-raising and other cultivation initiatives and works to identify resources for new and existing programs.

Specifically, the Dean will:

  • Oversee the work of the department chairs and their faculties and staff.
  • Oversee faculty and staff hiring, evaluation, retention, and professional development.
  • Oversee curriculum development, review, and assessment.
  • Work collaboratively with the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the other school deans to develop academic policies, plan for new facilities and technology, and seek efficiencies and opportunities for shared resources.
  • Serve on the President's Council and other governance bodies and committees requiring decanal membership.
  • Foster external relationships with community organizations and the media industries.
  • Initiate and oversee school committees and task forces and nominations to College committees and task forces.
  • Promote and foster collaboration within the School and across the College.
  • Plan, oversee, and develop School budget(s).
  • Seek funding opportunities from outside sources to support School and College objectives.

The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader with a record of teaching and scholarly/creative endeavor consistent with the attainment of tenure. S/he will hold a terminal degree, preferably in one of the disciplines of the School, and have a demonstrated record of success in higher education administration. The new dean must have a proven record of commitment to diversity and social engagement as well as significant experience in faculty/staff development and evaluation. Resource management, fund-raising, and strategic planning are requirements for the dean's position.

University of Florida Digital Worlds Institute, Visiting Professor/3D Interactive Media Artist

The University of Florida Digital Worlds Institute seeks enthusiastic and skilled Applicants with expertise in the fields of Interactive Media /Motion Graphics/ Digital Arts & Sciences to both teach and create visual media for our research and production projects. The starting date for Spring 2011 is January 3, 2011, with a possible end dates in either May or July of 2011.

Columbia University, Director of the Tow Center for the Internet and Digital Media

Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism (www.journalism.columbia.edu) invites applications for the Director of the Tow Center for the Internet and Digital Media, who shall also be appointed as a professor of journalism (rank and track to be determined).

The successful candidate will serve as Director of the newly created Tow Center for the Internet and New Media Innovation, with responsibility for helping to create a new academic center dedicated to the teaching of journalism with innovative applications online and research into emerging uses of digital media in journalism.

We envision this center bringing visibility to the School’s contributions to this field of endeavor and study, seeking opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with other Columbia schools and with external agencies and organizations.

In that light, the Director will be involved in executing and overseeing original scholarly research; collaborating with and studying news organizations, new and old; developing and testing new models for creating and delivering information, along with business innovations to support those models; and advising how to raise additional funds through research and program grants.

She/he will also be responsible for working closely with the Journalism School’s dean, dean of academic affairs, and faculty to ensure the development of an enhanced curriculum in digital media. In this role, the incumbent will develop and teach digital media courses, explore the best methods of reporting and journalistic presentation for the Internet, supervise master’s projects and theses, and advise students.

Qualified applicants are pioneers and leaders in digital journalism, from anywhere in the world, who are able to demonstrate scholarly and/or professional accomplishments worthy of appointment to a faculty position. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in working with digital media, along with an understanding of curriculum planning and academic program development. A bachelor’s degree is required; advanced degree preferred.

Lamar University, Graphic Design, Full-time, Tenure track, Nine month appointment

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
MFA in Graphic Design. (MFA in a related field with significant professional graphic design experience will be considered.) Expertise and professional experience in print and/or multimedia. Record of professional and creative accomplishment. Ability to teach typography, logo design, brand identity, page layout and publishing using industry standard software to include Illustrator and InDesign. Knowledge of MAC and PC platforms.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Teaching experience at the undergraduate level. Knowledge of current design industry trends as demonstrated with published creative work or professional experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teach graphic design, computer graphics, and foundation design courses. Advise Graphic Design students. Provide leadership in curriculum, equipment and facilities development for both graduate and undergraduate programs. Serve on departmental, college and university committees. And other responsibilities as assigned by the department chair.

A minor in Art History is available to students in other programs or departments by earning 18 hours of approved credit. The Department of Art offers a Master of Arts in Visual Art with an emphasis in either Studio Art or Art History. The department is home to approximately 180 art majors, ten fulltime faculty, and four adjunct faculty. Graphic design is the largest area of study.

Department facilities include two computer labs, a graphic design and digital photography facility, providing students with the opportunity to utilize both Mac and PC based equipment. The graphic design facility consists of 20 PC and 4 MAC workstations with 3 dedicated workstations for printing and scanning along with a variety of output including a large format printer. Software includes current versions of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premier Pro, Flash, Lightwave 3D, Maya, and ZBrush. Our facilities are well maintained to accommodate students working in all facets of Graphic Design. The digital photography facility includes 16 student workstations, a teacher station, dedicated high-end workstations for large format printing and video editing along with a wet darkroom.

The mission of the Lamar University Department of Art is to provide an environment designed to nurture artistic, academic and personal growth in Lamar University students. Through its curricula and community outreach, the department prepares the art student for a professional career in the discipline with courses in practice, theory, art history, and art education.
