Tutorials
The IDMAA 2005 Tutorial Program is intended to provide three hours of intensive instruction from industry experts on topics you can use. You will receive lesson plan templates, concrete teaching examples, and live demonstrations of the essential skills.
Because these workshops are simultaneous, you may select at most one of them on the registration form. The tutorials will take place from 9:00 to 12:00 noon, Wednesday, March 16th.
Tutorial 1: Building Educational Game Mods
This tutorial will be led by Ken McAllister (University of Arizona) and team-taught by several members of the iDMAa Special Interest Group on Games (gSIG). The use of off-the-shelf game engines will be introduced. Techniques for teaching students how to build educational software by taking advantage of game engines" built-in capabilities will be presented.
To take this course, no prior knowledge is required. However, experience with 3d tools such as 3D Max or Maya, or programming experience can be helpful.
Tutorial 2: Delivering Video with Flash
This tutorial will be conducted by David Hassoun, U. Colorado/Denver. Flash Video offers the ability to deliver high quality streaming video to millions of users. In this hands-on session, learn how to incorporate video into your Flash applications. Topics include: generating Flash Video, delivery and display options, optimizing the video experience, and providing playback controls for users.
To take this course, you should have basic video and Flash MX 2004 experience. A knowledge of ActionScript will also be helpful.
Tutorial 3: DVD Authoring
The power and ability of DVD authoring in the recent years has become more and more accessible to all level of developers. In this hands on workshop we will cover the basic concepts of DVD authoring including video encoding, motion menus, usability issues, and some of the complex sequencing issues and solutions that the DVD format provides.
To take this course, you should have basic video and Adobe PhotoShop experience. A knowledge of video editing concepts will also be helpful.
